Digital billboard

A digital billboard is an advertising screen that shows several ads in rotation, each for a few seconds, instead of a single printed poster. It is the screen-based version of the classic billboard.

How does it work?

A digital billboard is a large LED or LCD screen, installed along a road, on a building, in a station or in a mall. It belongs to digital out-of-home (DOOH): screens in streets, malls, stations.

Instead of one poster for weeks, the screen plays a loop. Each advertiser holds a slot in that loop, the loop runs all day, and your ad comes back every time it restarts. Your slice of the loop is your share of voice.

Because the content is digital, it can change without anyone climbing a ladder. A campaign can start in the morning, show a different message in the evening, or stop the moment a promotion ends. Most ads are still images. Some screens accept motion or video, depending on the location and local rules.

Example

Illustrative example: a digital billboard runs a 60-second loop shared by 6 advertisers, each with a 10-second slot. Over 12 hours, the loop plays 720 times, so each ad is shown 720 times. One slot out of six gives you a sixth of the screen’s airtime. Take two slots and your ad comes back twice per loop.

Why it matters when you plan a DOOH campaign

The first thing to check on a digital billboard is not its size, it is its loop. How long does it last, how many advertisers share it, and is your slot guaranteed? A big screen where your ad appears rarely does less for you than a smaller one where people see it again and again.

Then check where it stands. A digital billboard on a ring road speaks to drivers moving fast: short message, big type. One on a shopping street corner near your store speaks to people on foot, a few steps from buying. Same format, different job.

The closer the screen is to the moment people decide, the more a simple, local message can do: the address, the offer, the distance to your door.
